7 Symptoms of a Bad PCV Valve or PCV Hose

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation system, commonly called the PCV system, helps manage gases and pressure inside an engine’s crankcase. Depending on the vehicle, the system may use a separate PCV valve, molded PCV hoses, connectors, check valves, an oil separator, or an integrated valve-cover assembly.
When a PCV valve sticks or a PCV hose cracks, collapses, disconnects, or becomes restricted, the engine may develop drivability, oil-control, or air-leak symptoms.
However, these symptoms can also be caused by other engine, intake, ignition, fuel, or vacuum-system problems. Proper diagnosis is important before replacing a PCV component.
What Does the PCV System Do?
During engine operation, a small amount of combustion gas can pass the piston rings and enter the crankcase. These gases may contain air, fuel vapor, moisture, and oil mist.

6. Hesitation or Reduced Engine Response
A PCV-related air leak may contribute to hesitation, uneven acceleration, or reduced engine response. This can occur when unexpected air enters the intake system or when a damaged hose affects airflow.
The driver may notice:
- Hesitation during acceleration
- Inconsistent throttle response
- Reduced power
- Engine surging
- Stalling when slowing down
These symptoms overlap with fuel, ignition, sensor, turbocharger, and air-intake problems. A visual inspection and appropriate diagnostic testing are needed to identify the source.
If the PCV hose connects to an intake or turbocharger system, inspect nearby hoses and clamps at the same time.
7. Smoke or Increased Oil Consumption
Some PCV system problems may allow more oil vapor or liquid oil to enter the intake system. Depending on the engine and the severity of the problem, this can contribute to exhaust smoke or increased oil consumption.
Possible signs include:
- Oil level dropping between services
- Oil deposits in the intake system
- Smoke from the exhaust
- Oil-fouled components
- Increased oil residue around PCV connections
Smoke and oil consumption can also be related to valve seals, piston rings, turbocharger seals, cylinder wear, incorrect oil level, or other mechanical problems.

What Causes PCV Valves and Hoses to Fail?
